99% of people who stutter don't have a speech problem!

Stuttering, or stammering, is a symptom. Speech therapy may alleviate the symptom but it doesn't address the underlying causes of the stutter; very much like taking an aspirin to relieve a headache but doing little to address the cause of the headache.

So, unless you have a physical defect that causes you to stutter 100% of the time in 100% of situations, you are probably one of the 99% of people who can cure their stuttering without speech therapy.

It may be easier than you think.

Here's my story.

I started stuttering when I was a little kid and stuttered for over forty years; see my article “I stuttered for 47 years and then I didn’t”.

I have been to more speech therapists than I care to remember and read a mountain of books on stuttering. Many of the speech therapists and books helped me to manage my stutter but none helped me to overcome it.

Stuttering during my teenage years was traumatic! Morning roll-call at an all-boys boarding school was a daily misery!

I got so desperate that I considered cutting out my tongue so that I had a 'real' reason not to speak. I also considered taking a vow of silence and never speaking again.

Thankfully my desire to speak was stronger than my desire to quit trying.

By the time I was twenty I had started to develop fairly effective techniques to manage my stutter reasonably well. When times were good, these techniques helped me to get around’ 90% of my stutter.

But 90% wasn't good enough because the remaining 10% was so unpredictable, it could strike at any moment.

And because that remaining 10% was so unpredictable it ruled my life. I was a stutterer whether I was stuttering or not.

I was always afraid of stuttering.

I was afraid of some situations 100% of the time; even if I didn't stutter, I never knew when the next time would happen.

My stutter dictated so many choices; from simple choices to major career decisions. For example, at a restaurant I would avoid ordering meals with words that were hard to say simply to avoid the embarrassment of stuttering. But, more seriously, stuttering influenced many important career decisions. I wanted to be a teacher but I suffered from migraine headaches when I stuttered too much, so I chose careers that didn’t rely too much on speaking.

All that changed in 2009 when I found out that stuttering wasn’t a ‘speech problem’ and that I had been focusing on the symptom and not the cause.

I didn't stutter all the time. I never stuttered when thinking or singing. I never stuttered when talking to myself. Sometimes my stutter was worse than at other times. And some situations were worse than others.

My breakthrough came when I purchased a speech-recognition program. Before I could use the program I had to train it to recognise my speech by reading a few paragraphs from the manual. I could read fluently when the microphone was off but as soon as I switched the microphone on, I stuttered and, as a result, was unable to train the program. I learned a valuable lesson that day that lead to my breakthrough;

How could my stutter be a speech problem if I didn’t stutter all the time?

Within 30 days I had achieved ‘functional fluency’ and my speech got better and better. A year after my breakthrough I began coaching and training.  Better late than never, eh?

You can read more about my experience in my article “I stuttered for 47 years and then I didn’t”.

Over Twelve Years of Functional Fluency.

What does that mean?

Quite simply, it means that, for the past twelve years, stuttering has not been a factor in my day-to-day life. I speak fluently 99.999% of the time.

I understand the underlying cause of the stutter and, if stuttering ever raises its head, I know how to deal with it. In fact, I usually only stutter when I talk about stuttering! And that was the main reason I never offered to teach what I had learned. I wasn’t perfect.

But when I considered the incredible value I have gained from this insight and approach, I decided that, perfect or not, it was time to share it. The idea of “functional fluency’ proved to be the deciding factor. I am not perfect and I do not have to be. I have a twelve-year track record of victory over my stutter, that’s ‘functional fluency’, and it must count for something.

Most importantly, I no longer think of myself as a stutterer and have no fear of stuttering.

If ‘functional fluency’ appeals to you, then read on.

Be sceptical, not cynical.

By all means be sceptical of any claims but please don't be cynical until you've checked it out properly. While scepticism is healthy, cynicism never got anyone anywhere.

If your stutter has plagued you with frustration and misery then you owe it to yourself and your awesome potential to gain the victory over it and not to rest until you do.

That was my commitment to myself thirty years ago and I never let up until I found the cure for my stutter. I encourage you to do the same; never give up, never accept defeat. It is the only way to win!

If you are serious about beating your stutter then accept my challenge. You may have been disappointed before but that is no excuse not to try again. In fact, Henry Ford said that

“Failure is just another opportunity to start again more intelligently!”

So keep trying, every experience is a lesson, some lessons are better than others.

I sincerely hope and trust that I can help you to overcome your stutter.
