Episode 006 of 100Things I Want to Share Before I Die

The Golden Triangle, an alternative to the Wheel of Life model.

The Golden Triangle is Episode 006 of my Bucket List project “100 Things I Want to Share Before I Die”.

Why a different model?

Because the Golden Triangle is much simpler.

Have you used the Wheel of Life as part of your goal-achievement program?

If so,

  • How often do you think about it?
  • How often do you work on it?
  • Can you quickly and easily recall each segment of your Wheel of Life?

If you are anything like me (and most of the people I know), you may have completed a Wheel of Life exercise at some point in your life ... and then forgotten about it for a few days, a week, a month or even a year or more.

The Wheel of Life is too heavy to ‘carry around’ in our mind, so we tend to leave it at home tucked away in a “Goals” file or displayed on our vision board.

The Wheel of Life didn’t work for me. I wanted something simpler, a model that was instantly and easily available anytime I wanted it.

The Golden Triangle does that for me. It may suit you too.

Mental chunking.

The Golden Triangle taps into the power of ’mental chunking’ which is a very efficient way to manage data in short-term memory; each chunk a triangle.

This means that the entire Golden Triangle can easily be held in short-term memory; if only for a few seconds at a time. Anywhere and anytime. That is important.

Furthermore, the structure of the Golden Triangle instantaneously reveals the relationship between the key elements;

  • One Purpose: Happiness
  • Three Supports: Health, Wealth and Love.

And each triangle within the Golden Triangle has easy to remember, supporting concepts; secondary layers of mental chunking.

Allow me to explain.

One Purpose: The Pursuit of Happiness.

I believe that every human being wants to be happy and that everything we do is an attempt to find greater happiness. Even the most depraved among us searches for happiness, albeit in misguided ways.

When we understand what truly makes us happy, we are able to intelligently design our life to support our happiness. In doing so, we obtain the key to a meaningful life.

The good news is that, living a happy life is a lot easier (and cheaper!) than most of us imagine. As Marcus Aurelius observed,

“Very little is needed to live a happy life. It is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.”

Happiness is therefore at the top of the Golden Triangle, our ultimate personal purpose.

Three Supports: Health, Wealth and Love.

Like a platform, happiness is supported by Health, Wealth and Love co-existing in relative balance and harmony with each other.

A deficiency in one or more of the supporting triangles can, and will, undermine our ability to be happy.

The art of happiness therefore, lies in maintaining a harmonious balance between the three.

The Relationships.

While Health and Wealth are primarily self-centred, Love is other-centred. It is no accident that, in the Golden Triangle, Happiness is fully supported by Love.

It also no accident that Love is supported by Health and Wealth. What is often missed in the instruction to “Love your neighbour as yourself” is the standard by which we are to measure our neighbourly-love, “as yourself”. The extent to which we are able to love ourselves, determines our capacity to love our neighbours, as ourselves.

A common mistake that many people make is to focus on growing one supporting triangle at the expense of the other two. We need look no further than the ambitious executive who sacrifices Health and Love to accumulate great Wealth only to discover, at the end of the race, that happiness is lost.

Balance and harmony.

Happiness by design.

Each of the triangles within the Golden Triangle has its own set of three supporting triangles. For example, in my version of the Golden Triangle, Health has a secondary layer of three supporting triangles; Attitude, Diet and Exercise.

Our design for Happiness is therefore worked out in our design for each of the triangles within the Golden Triangle; one layer at a time.
